Girl Code Academy 2021 Reunion & Graduation

--

It was all heartfelt sentiments and easy humor at The Nest Hub on the 11th of December, as GCA held its first reunion, which saw twenty-six women share their respective good, comparative bad, and their collective “omo” since graduating from the GCA.

Founded in the twilight of 2016, The Girl Code Academy (GCA) is an initiative of Deola Haruna and Peter Ogedengbe, inspired to equip women in their majority, with the requisite skills set to ease them into — and plausibly have them take over — the tech ecosystem, and if Saturday is anything to go by, they certainly are doing well.

The Girl Code Academy

The opening speakers were recent graduands, fresh out of the fifth cohort, and eager to talk about their curves. The room found Helen to have a weakness for design and Mariam Haruna the front-end track, confessing about her passion since she joined the Microsoft Learning team.

Apparently, The GCA doesn’t just equip women, it also affords them a chance at self-discovery. With Dolapo Ogedengbe, a graduand of the first cohort, sharing how the classes helped in realizing her strengths and perceived weaknesses; successfully landing her a fully-funded MSc scholarship in CyberPsychology. While Dolapo would actively avoid coding, a lot was said about the internship opportunities afforded following graduation.

Chioma Okafor detailed to the room at large how the experience helped in landing her a job at Coursera amongst other things.

GCA recognizes that tech is not a one-size-fits-all kind of deal, so when the tutor Opeyemi conclusively addressed the room, she highlighted individualization and the importance of finding a niche that would eventually work for them.

It was an insightful gathering, one that showed the greatness that lies in the forthcoming years. Another cohort begins next year, you can follow on Instagram @girlcodeacademyng and on Twitter @GirlCodeAcademy so you don’t miss out on any updates.
