Creatives vs Impostor Syndrome; How to drop the Doubt and Show Up

--

Today, let’s talk about something that’s as common as the morning sun yet often hidden in the shadows, Impostor syndrome.

And for us creatives, it can feel like a constant companion on our journey to creative growth and success.

You’ve just finished a piece of artwork, a story, or maybe a song. You pour your heart and soul into it, but as you step back to admire your work, that voice in your head creeps in. “Is this good enough?” “Am I really talented or just fooling myself?”

Yes, welcome to the club of impostor syndrome — It’s a fancy term for feeling like a fraud even when you’re doing your best.

As a creative, it’s almost a necessity for you to be surrounded by talent in various industries, from music to fashion to film except you don’t want to grow in your craft. It’s inspiring, no doubt, but it can also mess with your head.

Impostor syndrome doesn’t care if you’re a beginner or a seasoned professional. It’ll sneak up on you when you least expect it. And for those of us who haven’t had formal training, it can feel like it’s shouting, “You don’t belong here!”

Its also not just about feeling inadequate on your own. It’s also influenced by the world around us. Factors like societal expectations, stereotypes, and systemic inequalities can crank up those feelings of self-doubt. So yeah, impostor syndrome doesn’t play fair.

But here’s the truth: You’re not alone in feeling this way. In fact, some of the most celebrated creatives have grappled with impostor syndrome at some point in their careers and are still facing it till today.

In the words of Maya Angelou: “I have written eleven books, but each time I think, ‘Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.”

For us, Impostor Syndrome in a way tells you that you are doing something right even when you are convinced otherwise and embracing it is not a sign of failing but rather it proves your willingness to push boundaries and pursue growth.

It’s a reminder that creativity often thrives in the face of doubt and uncertainty.

Now, you’ve likely encountered countless articles offering advice on overcoming impostor syndrome. Yet, like an unwelcome visitor, it persists, refusing to depart when you most wish it would.

But really, what can we do to overcome this nagging feeling of self-doubt? Keep reading to teach yourself actionable steps you can take from other creators like you.

Embrace Your Uniqueness:

Your perspective, experiences, and voice are your greatest assets. Embrace them wholeheartedly and remember that your uniqueness sets you apart in a sea of talent. Be who we call the Optimist

Practice, Practice, Practice:

The more you create, the more confident you’ll become in your abilities. Set aside time each day to hone your craft, whether it’s writing, painting, or dancing. Remember, every masterpiece started as a rough draft. And that takes you to the point where you become the grounded creative.

Challenge Negative Thoughts:

When those feelings of self-doubt creep in, challenge them head-on. Remind yourself of your past successes, no matter how small. Celebrate your progress and focus on how far you’ve come.

Seek Feedback and Support:

Don’t be afraid to share your work with others and ask for feedback. Join local creative communities, attend workshops, and collaborate with fellow artists. Surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage you.

Celebrate Your Achievements:

Finally, don’t forget to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Whether it’s finishing a project, receiving praise from a mentor, or simply overcoming a creative block, take the time to give yourself a nice pat on the back.
